Liberia participates in UN-HABITAT’s General Assembly

 Monrovia, May 27, 2019:Liberia is participating in the first ever General Assembly of UN-HABITAT which kicked off on Monday in the Kenyan Capital Nairobi.

UN-Habitat is the United Nations Human Settlements Programme.

Acting Deputy Internal Affairs Minister for Urban Affairs, Honorable Abubakar Bah is heading a two-member Liberian delegation. The other member is George N. Williams of UN-HABITAT Liberia office.

According to a release, the UN-Habitat Assembly brings together more than 3,000 delegates, including 40 ministers and high-level government representatives from 116 countries. 

During the Assembly, Honorable Bah is expected to make a presentation on the need to revamp Liberia’s urbanization programs.

The assembly replaces the UN Governing Council following the endorsement of the resolution by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018.

The resolution established a new governance structure which upgraded UN-Habitat’s status to a universal body and created a 36-member board.

The Assembly is being held under the theme, "Innovation for Better Quality of Life in Cities and Communities”.

During the course of the assembly which runs from the 27th -31st of May 2019, the General Assembly will review & approve its Strategic Plan 2020-2025 and also review the Progress in the Implementation of the New Urban Agenda, among others.

Members of the United Nations are expected to participate in the deliberations of the UN-HABITAT 1st General Assembly.
