Internal Affairs Ministry threatens local officials who handle rape cases

Monrovia, August 27, 2020:The Minister of Internal Affairs, Honorable Varney A. Sirleaf has threatened to dismiss any local government official or traditional leader involved in handling cases related to rape.

 

The Minister describes rape as a serious human right violation that must be handled only by the courts and not local officials.

 

A release issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs Thursday says Minister Sirleaf has sent out a circular ordering County Superintendents to thoroughly monitor and report any local official found in violation of this mandate..

 

The release quotes Minister Sirleaf as saying in addition to dismissal, violators will be turned over to the court for prosecution.

 

The Internal Affairs Minister also encouraged community dwellers, civil society and community based organizations to report local and traditional leaders found interfering with rape cases.
