Calm returns to National Muslim Council; as leaders quit posts

Monrovia, February 17, 2020:The Legal Counsel of the National Muslim Council of Liberia has announced that members of the current leadership of the National Muslim Council of Liberia (NMCL) have all resigned their respective positions.

Resignations of the Muslim leaders formed part of ruling of an investigation into leadership crisis that engulfed the National Muslim Council of Liberia for the past months. 

The investigation was led by Attorney Alhaji Losene F. Bility, Legal Counsel of the Muslim Council of Liberia. 

According to the resignation letter dated February 15,2020, the leadership headed by its Chairman Sheikh Oumaru A. Kamara informed Attorney Bility that all other officers who came to power since 2010 to present do hereby tender in their resignation. 

Prominent among the current leadership are the Council's National Chairman Sheikh Oumaru A. Kamara, Sheikh Akibu Sheriff, Secretary General and Sheikh Abubacar M Sumaworo, Grand Mulfti of the National Muslim Council of Liberia. 

Other members include Sheikh Abdullah A. Kromah, Deputy Grand Mulfti and Sheikh Al'hassan A. Kamara who served as Assistant Grand Mulfti of the National Muslim Council, among others. 

Meanwhile a transitional leadership is expected to formed shortly pending election of a new corps of officers of the National Muslim Council of Liberia.

In mid-2019, confusion ensued within the Muslim Council when some aggrieved members took to the media in protest of what they termed as the prolong stay into office of Chairman Sheikh Oumaru A. Kamara’s leadership and its failure to hold elections, among other accusations.

With interventions of some senior leaders of the Islamic community in Liberia including Internal Affairs Minister Honorable Varney A. Sirleaf, a mediatory effort was carved which among other things requested Attorney Losene F. Bility to look into the matter.

Other prominent leaders who intervened are former Finance Minister Losene F. Kamara, Abdullah Sarnoh of Mamakai & Sons, and Honorable Usmane T. Jalloh, Advisor to the President on Islamic Affairs.

According to Attorney Bility, critical among the issues was a look at the constitution of the National Muslim Council of Liberia.

 “These efforts have restored calm to the National Muslim Council as members are gearing up for their which will be held soon”. Attorney Bility concluded.
