Liberia Suspends Poro and Sande Societies Until 2026, Announces Cultural Reforms

At a press conference held on March 25, 2025, Minister of Internal Affairs F. Sakila Nyumalin Sr., alongside the National Council of Chiefs, announced a nationwide suspension of all Poro and Sande society activities effective April 30, 2025, until January 2026. This decision follows widespread complaints from traditional communities and aims to regulate and reform cultural practices in alignment with national goals.

Key measures include:

  • A mandatory release of all initiates by April 30, 2025.
  • Appointment of new traditional and cultural coordinators at the county level.
  • Immediate dissolution of existing cultural positions.
  • An upcoming set of regulations to govern traditional practices.

The Minister emphasized that these decisions reflect both the voice of traditional leaders and the government's commitment to preserving positive cultural practices while addressing public concerns. The Ministry urged full compliance from all cultural practitioners across the country.
