
Madina Citizens, Sime Darby agree to dialogue as new Company assures improved relationship; thanks to Minister Sirleaf for promt intervention.
Western Liberia, December 12, 2019: The Management of Malaysian oil giant Sime Darby on Thursday December 12th appealed for dialogue with citizens of Madina Township in Grand Cape Mount County following a protest action against the company which led to roadblocks and temporary suspension of its operations.
Upon getting news of protest, Internal Affairs Minister, Honorable Varney A. Sirleaf immediately convened a town hall meeting in Madina Town meant to listen to all sides.
The citizens said their protest was due to prolong delays by Sime Darby to address their concerns relating to exclusion of the community from social benefits even though portion of the area is be occupied by the company. According to them, all efforts aimed finding a solution to their plights have reportedly fallen on deaf ears therefore this action was intended to claim action.
"We intensified our protest especially when we heard that Sime Darby has sold out the concession, and that a new company is about to take over. We believe if nothing is done, the incoming company will not listen to us". Youth Spokesperson Manobah explained. Meanwhile Minister Sirleaf also asked the citizens to remain calm and attend the called me scheduled for Monday, December 16th.
At the same time, Mr. Asaad Fadel, Chief Executive Officer of Mano Oil Palm Industries, the company that is taking over the plantation has assured citizens of cordial working relationship with the communities.
In attendance were superintendents of Bomi County Honorable Adama J. Robinson and host Aaron Vincent including local officials of both counties.
