Two tuberculosis diagnostic centers for drug resistant tuberculosis patients have been set up in Liberia, an official of the National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Control Program disclosed Tuesday. Program Manager Dr. Catherine Cooper told the Liberia News Agency that the centers were established in Ganta, Nimba County and at the TB Annex in Congo Town, Montserrado County.
She said with the establishment of the centers, the program now has the capacity to test and confirm drug resistant TB cases.
Dr. Cooper explained that the NLTCP realized few years ago that some TB patients were not responding to the regular TB treatment due to their resistance to drugs.
Meanwhile, the NLTCP Manager says there is an indication that TB is on the increase in Liberia as the program continues to receive new cases every year.
