UNDP Liberia Resident Representative Engages Communities in Lofa County on Sustainable Development Initiatives

On February 18, 2024, Aliou Dia, the UNDP Liberia Resident Representative, continued his week-long tour of impactful projects supported by UNDP in collaboration with various partners, including the Ministries of Local Government, Internal Affairs, Agriculture, the Forestry Development Authority (FDA), the Society for the Conservation of Nature Liberia (SCNL), and Community Health and Agricultural Programs (CHAP).

During his visit to the communities of Kailahun and Lukasu in Lofa County, Mr. Dia and his team met with local leaders and beneficiaries to discuss the progress of the Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) Project. This vital initiative is designed to empower communities through sustainable practices in lowland rice farming, cocoa cultivation, vegetable production, and other livelihood programs.

The CBFM Project not only enhances agricultural productivity but also emphasizes environmental stewardship. By working closely with the FDA, the project recruits, trains, and deploys Eco-guards who collaborate with forest rangers to patrol protected areas, effectively preventing illegal hunting, poaching, and deforestation.

In his discussions with community leaders, Mr. Dia encouraged residents to take ownership of the project, emphasizing that its sustainability relies on their commitment to work diligently towards self-sufficiency. He reassured them of UNDP’s unwavering support for the Government of Liberia’s Arrest Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID).

Community beneficiaries expressed their appreciation for the ongoing efforts to rebuild their communities. They engaged in fruitful discussions about the opportunities and challenges they face, including the need for improved Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, storage solutions, Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), cash transfer programs, irrigation systems, and increased investment in lowland rice farming.

In response to the community’s needs, UNDP announced that a technical team is currently conducting assessments to enhance support in the areas highlighted during the discussions.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs remains dedicated to fostering partnerships with UNDP and other stakeholders, ensuring that the voices of communities are heard and their needs addressed. Together, we are committed to building a sustainable and inclusive future for all Liberians.
